Detailed FTA Class Descriptions ​ ​ A Supervisor’s Guide to Reasonable Suspicion Training This course meets the FTA mandated requirement for Reasonable Suspicion Drug Testing training found at 49 CFR Part 655.14 (b). This course is designed to enable a supervisor to determine whether reasonable suspicion exists to require testing. ​ The first chapter of the course provides a brief overview of the DOT and FTA drug and alcohol testing requirements as they pertain to supervisors. Subsequent chapters provide specific training on signs and symptoms, prescription drugs, a confrontation process, reasons for testing, situations that constitute refusal to test, a chart of drug and alcohol retention times in the body and a list of community help lines. PDF files providing more detailed information on drugs and other pertinent topics are accessible with a mouse click. A Certificate of Completion with the course and the individual’s name should be printed and placed in the training file. An 85 page supplemental manual on CD is provided free. ​ Refresher Training For supervisors who have taken the initial “A Supervisor’s Guide to Reasonable Suspicion Testing” course. This course is designed to ensure supervisors maintain their understanding and “awareness” of the Reasonable Suspicion Testing process. The course is revised and updated annually and includes information on patterns of abuse, addiction, prescription drugs, a workplace confrontation process, and what abuse costs employers and employees in profits, salaries, and taxes. ​ This course is designed to ensure supervisors maintain their understanding and “awareness” of the Reasonable Suspicion Testing process. The course is revised and updated annually and includes information on prescription drugs, patterns of abuse, ways to decrease workplace abuse, addiction and what abuse actually costs employers and workers in profits, salaries, and taxes. Note: It is recommended that Supervisor Refresher training be considered every 12 to 18 months. Employee Drug Training This course meets the requirements of 49 CFR Part 655.14 (b), and includes information on the effects of alcohol and controlled substances on an individual’s health, work, and personal life; signs and symptoms of a substance abuse problem; and ways to get help. This course provides information concerning alcohol and the five most commonly abused categories of drugs. The drugs are marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates and Phencyclidine (PCP). The course also provides the employee with information on Club Drugs and Inhalants. A chart of drug and alcohol retention times in the body and a list of community help lines are all included. PDF files providing detailed information on the different drugs and other pertinent topics are accessible with a click of the mouse. There are chapter quizzes and a final exam. A Certificate of Completion listing the course, the individual’s name and the completion date should be printed and placed in the training file. ​ Designated Employer Representative (DER) Training This training course provides a DER with a thorough education of his or her duties as outlined in the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for drug and alcohol testing (49 CFR Part 40). The course also includes a comprehensive dictionary of testing terminology, specific modal regulations and their procedures for workplace testing programs.
